As per reports, Maruti Suzuki is working on a compact SUV catered for the Indian market. It will be based on the Baleno hatchback, and hence, the company hopes that it will capture the interest of the buyers in India.
According to a report in Mint, this new model has been given the codename YTB and the design could well be a mini crossover. This XL6 will be based on Ertiga – the company will once again head in the direction of clubbing a new product with an existing one.
In the current scheme of things, the company does not have too many bright spots in the SUV product profile. Indian market has seen a growing demand for SUVs of all shapes and sizes and this is what has forced Maruti to expand their capabilities.
Maruti has dominated the Indian market, but their growth has been propelled by the small cars that offer impressive mileage and come packed with a number of safety features. However, not woth the Baleno-based offering, the company is looking to challenge Kia.
Maruti has set its sights on the coming year and with this new offering, they are looking to get the ball rolling in the SUV sector. For them, the XL6 and Ertiga have been decent in the MPV segment, but now they need to capture the market in the compact SUV segment.
