The Volkswagen Polo GT was responsible for creating the trend for hot hatches in India. Now, it belongs to a niche segment and was extremely popular among enthusiasts looking for a compact, performance car on a budget.
Now, for the year 2020, Volkswagen India has brought back its pocket rocket with few key changes. For starters, the older 1.2-litre TSI motor has been replaced by the company's new smaller capacity 1.0-litre TSI engine that also powers the regular Polo and the Vento.
Also, secondly the company has replaced the much-loved, yet expensive DSG unit with a more cost-effective 6-speed automatic torque converter.
Design and Styling
As far as the looks are concerned, the new Polo GT is very much similar to the 2020 VW Polo. There are, however, a number of visual markers that differentiate it from the standard hatchback. Most notably there is a GT badge on the new honeycomb grille. Also, there is black outside rear-view mirrors (ORVM), a new, bigger roof-mounted spoiler. And then, there is the GT badge on the tailgate, and the 'GT TSI' lettering on the C-pillar.
Interior and Features
Now, we step inside the cabin and you will be able to notice absolutely no changes barring the new automatic gear lever. The cabin continues still has the same all-black interior with matching fabric upholstery in chequered design as well as the same dashboard layout.
It is similar to the regular Polo and the GT TSI also comes with a multi-functional, flat-bottom steering wheel – it can be adjusted for both tilt and reach, and it's wrapped in faux leather as well.
The 2020 Volkswagen Polo GT TSI comes with adequate number of safety features that include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, anti-pinch power windows, rear parking sensors as well as auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror. However, this car does not come with a rear parking camera, and this is certainly a big miss. It should be mentioned here that it does come with Electronic Stability Control and Hill Hold Control.
Performance and Verdict
This new Polo GT comes with the carmaker's new three-cylinder 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine and it has replaced the older four-cylinder 1.2-litre TSI motor. This same engine powers the regular Polo and Vento sedan.
Priced at ₹ 9.67 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is almost at par with the older GT variant. If you want a car with brilliant performance, this one should fit all your bills.
